Hi guys.
Is it possible to run OSX + LOGIC X (including all sample content) on an EXTERNAL SSD through THUNDERBOLT ?
And is it fast enough?
In another article here on logicuser I read that SSDs are fast enough to have LOGIC and ALL SAMPLE CONTENT on the SAME SSD.
But is it also fast enough from an EXTERNAL Ssd (through thunderbolt) ?

Re: OSX + LOGIC X on EXTERNAL SSD (through THUNDERBOLT)
probably: yes, yes and yes
haven't tested it myself, but...
...for short time i've run logicX under sierra externally with usb2 (only)
and i've found it amazingly fast enough...
just do the numbers:
afaik fastest ssd you can get is 6GB/s
TB1 is well beyond it...
so it should work out fine...
be shure your TB interface is up to the specs....
tested: i now have evenrything that can be run externally (samples, libraries etc)
hooked on usb3, running a spinnig HD through usb3: works super well
can't speak of 20+GB sample libraries (spitfire?) - but shouldn't be
that much of a bottleneck...call it a coffee-break at worst...
anyway: try it, test it, enjoy it ;-))

For sure. I use a SSD via Thunderbolt, and it's working. If you use a external drive for booting, it should be directly on the port , no Hub between, cause otherwise the harddisk will not be bootable.

Re: OSX + LOGIC X on EXTERNAL SSD (through THUNDERBOLT)
Oh wow. That sounds great speedwise.
I really did not expect this.
But then there is another problem.
I need to plug an EXTERNAL DISPLAY but i have ONLY 1 THUNDERBOLT PORT.
Is it really not possible to boot from a thunderbolt hub?
Isn't there any thunderbolt hub which is capable of letting external HDs boot?
Or is there any other way (usb) to use an external display and an external thunderbolt boot device at the same time.
What would you recommend me.
Because unfortunately I don't have the money too buy a new macbook in the next time.

Re: OSX + LOGIC X on EXTERNAL SSD (through THUNDERBOLT)
If you want to boot from external the mac is looking first to the harddisks, where here it can boot from, after that it looks for hubs or what is coming behind. It could be that you have a chance with thunderbolt, but that could be very expensive if it is not working.
There are possibilities to use a display via USB for this please look at amazon, if you find something, what is working with your display-hub.
