Was genau bringt mir diese Revolution denn nun?

It is. I know that this is an important question for many MIO Users. We have been circumspect in providing updates because we don?t want to over-promise or under-deliver. In particular, we have not announced a release date because we really don?t want to set a release date and then miss it; you folks have been waiting long enough - we want to be sure that the upgrade will release on the date we announce.

> I?m responsible for a number of studios using ULN-8s and some are more than ready for the upgrade. Can you offer any information on progress.

The hardware is done (we have the first production run of the hardware in house and tested). The software is still in process.

> Is the 3d upgrade still in the works? Is there any hope for release this year?

There is not much left to this year, I think it is unlikely that it will ship before the end of December.

> Next year?

It will definitely ship next year; we expect in the early part of the year, but I don?t have a release date to share at this time.

We are working really hard to get it finalized so that we can set a ship date and put in the hands of MIO Users...

> Thanks for anything you can share.

Probably the most important thing to share is the basic philosophy of the design.

With 3d we wanted to ensure that we had a new platform that continued our commitment to future-proofing these products and enhanced our ability to allow users to adjust their systems to meet changing needs by enhancement and expansion rather than replacement. At the same time we wanted to ensure that we removed existing pain points in using the product. So 3d makes it more powerful, more expandable and yet simpler to use.

The core of the expandability is both internal and external.

Internal Expandability is provided by an new MH technology called EdgeBus. The EdgeBus card slot on the 3d Card allows you to install any available EdgeCard into the back panel without having to take your unit apart. This allows you to pick and choose what additional I/O you would like to add to the box. Right now we have a variety of Digital I/O EdgeCards designed, built and tested (AES, SPDIF, ADAT, MIDI, MADI).

MHLink provides external expandability by allowing you to aggregate multiple boxes in hardware; if you need more channels, you just connect another box. MHLink and the console handle routing and clocking transparently, so your I/O count, DSP power and mixer simply grow as if you have one big box that contains all the resources provided by your hardware. You simply work with your channels; there is no box-to-box routing to manage, and all channels are available for mixing across a multi-bus mixer that spans all the boxes in your MHLink domain.

MHLink also supports direct, high bandwidth connection to the computer, so you can access the channels of your physically aggregated system via one audio device (e.g., no more CoreAudio aggregates). Since MHLink is based on Gigabit Ethernet, you can have up to 100m cable runs between units, and the units are electrically isolated from each other and the computer, so you don?t have to worry about ground loops between physically separated units, or between your audio system and your computer.

You can interface with the computer either via USB or Ethernet; that coupled with the EdgeBus card slot (which has a programmable, extremely high-bandwidth connection with the 3d core) means that the computer interface portion of the system is future-proof, as neither USB nor Ethernet is going away soon, and any changes in the ecosystem can be addressed in the future with a new EdgeCard.

Here is a picture of a stack of units with 3d Cards and a variety of EdgeCards installed:

https://www.mhsecure.com/images/3dStack_small_logo.jpg

Everything I describe above is implemented. Here is a summary of what is complete:

New MIO Console 3d
Revamped UI
64-bit Portable App
All +DSP plugins ported to 64-bit

Consolidated mixer supports up to 128 inputs and 64 busses @192k across all the boxes in a domain
Automagically manages routing within the domain (no user-level box-to-box routing required)
Automagically manages resource allocation between boxes in the domain
Automatically manages clocking between boxes in the domain
Simplified routing model relative to 2d (even for one box)
Lots of usability enhancements in the mixer

The processing going on in the "Custom dedicated processing cores" (marked with a *) above is approximately equivalent to the processing power of 30 2d DSPs. It is dedicated processing, so it can?t be used for plugins, but it is processing that has to be implemented on the DSP in 2d, and it requires no instantiable DSP power in 3d.

The RAM available to the instantiable +DSP core (1 GB) is more than 2500x the RAM available in 2d (384 kB); this means that running out of memory for delays or reverbs simply won?t happen on 3d.

In multibox systems, the instantiable processing is distributed over the processors in all the boxes, so adding more boxes adds more processing.
